Wedding Officiating

Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. (Genesis 2:24 ESV)

Marriage at Sovereign Grace Church

At Sovereign Grace Church our pastors want you to experience the profound joy that will come from a Christ-centered marriage. All of our prayer, counsel, and exhortations in marriage preparation will, Lord willing, lead you further into the glorious gospel. When Jesus is seen for who He is, then His Lordship over your marriage will become the desire of your heart, the Scriptures will become the blueprint for your marriage, and God will be glorified in the image of Christ and his church.

A Note on Remarriage

With respect to divorce and remarriage, the pastors of Sovereign Grace Church believe that marriage is a life-long covenant that can be broken only under the specific guidance of the Bible. Only after considerable evaluation would a pastor be free in his conscience to remarry someone who is divorced.

We encourage any member who has been divorced and is considering remarriage to contact a pastor to discuss the specifics of their situation. Sovereign Grace Church’s Statement on Marriage, Divorce, and Remarriage can be found in our Foundations Manual or made available upon request.

Premarital Counseling

SGC requires and provides premarital counseling prior to any marriage officiated by a pastor to ensure that couples entering into marriage will be prepared for its many challenges. Traditionally, the pastor who will officiate the wedding will also facilitate the premarital counseling. Requests for premarital counseling to be preformed by someone other than a pastor of SGC will be handled on a case-by-case basis.

Choosing an Officiating Pastor

If you are interested in having a SGC pastor officiate your wedding, you will need to contact him by email or through the church office to guarantee that his schedule will allow him to participate in your wedding. At minimum, weddings should be planned at least six (6) months in advance to avoid scheduling conflicts and to allow adequate time for premarital counseling. Before making any arrangements for a specific wedding date, we strongly suggest you verify pastoral availability. SGC cannot guarantee an officiating pastor if these guidelines are not followed.

Honorarium for Officiating Pastor

The pastor officiating your wedding is doing so in addition to the normal requirements of their pastoral duties. Their involvement in your wedding (premarital counseling, attendance at rehearsal and wedding, sermon preparation, consultations with bride and groom and other key participants) typically requires that they forgo other obligations, commitments, and family time. To express your gratitude and appreciation, we suggest a financial honorarium for the officiating pastor.

If your wedding is outside of the Twin Cities metro area, and the officiating pastor’s schedule allows for him to perform your wedding, you would be expected to pay for all travel expenses for the officiating pastor and his wife.

Premarital Counseling Resources

The resources for premarital counseling are sold at the resource center on Sunday mornings. With the exception of the SGC Premarital Counseling booklet, required books can also be purchased through online vendors like Amazon.

Required Resources:

To assist the pastor in getting to know strengths and areas for growth in your relationship, and to reduce the cost of your marriage license as allowed by state law, couples are also required to complete the PREPARE Premarital Inventory. Prior to the first premarital counseling session you will receive instructions regarding how to complete and pay for this inventory. The cost will be $35.00 per couple and is payable on the PREPARE website using a credit card.
