Women’s Prison Ministry

A new focus of ministry is coming to Sovereign Grace Church. This growing ministry emphasis concerns the oppressed, disenfranchised, and the least. It is a focus on ministering the gospel with mercy. Beginning July 8th Sovereign Grace Church will begin a prison ministry. Our goal for doing prison ministry is tied to our overall mission: We exist to make disciples who delight, display, and declare the gospel of Jesus Christ.

The first part of our mission statement fulfills the commandment to make disciples (Matt. 28:19). This commandment is not directly tied to a specific location or tells us what specific people we are to pursue. We are to simply go and make disciples. As a result we want to make disciples who delight, display, and declare the gospel of Jesus Christ. This is our goal for engaging women who are in prison. We read in Scripture a need to do ministry to those in prison. Hebrews 13:3 could not be more clear.

Remember those who are in prison, as though in prison with them, and those who are mistreated, since you also are in the body.

The meaning of this text is that if you are still in the body we should minister to those in a physical prison as if you are also there.

In addition to ministering at a physical prison we want to see women set free from their spiritual prison. In partnership with Interchange Faith Initiative we are able to do this at the Minnesota Correctional Facility in Shakopee, MN at least twice annually. This is a ministry to women at the facility and for women to participate. Another Scripture which stirs my heart for this ministry comes from Isaiah 61:1.

The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;”

Ministering to women in prison is an excellent opportunity to show the grace and mercy of Jesus Christ. Many women in prison have hurt. Many women have been hurt. Many women in prison have been separated from their family. Many women in prison have been abused by men. All the women at the Minnesota Correctional Facility in Shakopee need to experience the grace, mercy, and love of Jesus Christ.

There are many women at Sovereign Grace Church who are called to minister to the poor, broken hearted, and the captives by participating in women’s prison ministry. If you are one of these women contact me at spowers@sovgracemn.org. I would love to see you set free to do the work of the ministry (Ephesians 4:12).
