Baptism

  |   by:   |   filed under: General   |   No Comments

SGC will be conducting a baptism service on January 20 after the Sunday Celebration at Oak Grove Middle School.

The rational behind baptism is simple, Jesus commands that all his disciples be baptized.

Matthew 28:18-19 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit…”

It is clear from Scripture that baptism is an expectation for believers and that it identifies them as disciples of Jesus Christ. It is a public declaration and profession of their faith in Christ, symbolizing the inward spiritual realities of the Holy Spirit’s regenerative work.

Water baptism is a symbol of the believer’s union with the Lord in His death, burial, and resurrection.

Romans 6:3-5 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.

Because baptism symbolizes a believer’s union with Christ no other method of baptism (like sprinkling or pouring) captures this imagery except immersion, whereby a believer goes down under the water (burial) and then rises from it (resurrection).

To participate in the baptism on January 20, we ask that you register and attend a baptism class being held at 8:30 a.m. on January 6 at Oak Grove. This class will walk through the biblical basis for baptism, and also prepare parents and children as they seek to discern if it is time for a child’s public declaration of their profession of faith. You can register for the class here. If you have questions, please feel free to contact pastor Jon.

It is our joy to gather as the church and celebrate publicly what has happened in the hearts of believers in Christ. For those of you who have already been baptized, please plan to stay after the service on January 20 and join us for this special occasion.

Sunday Preparation

In our worship, be it singing or giving or sitting under the preaching of the Word, the goal of the members of Sovereign Grace Church is to experience God as gain. And to gain as much as we can from the Sunday Celebration we need the Holy Spirit to prepare our hearts to receive God’s grace.

  • Pray for Greg Dirnberger as he prepares to preach, Lord willing, from Matthew 7:7-11.
  • Pray for this Sunday’s worship leader, Jon Bloom, as well as the worship team.
  • Pray for all those serving in Discovery Kingdom and on the welcome team as well.
  • Consider joining the Sunday morning pre-celebration prayer group at 8:00 or 9:00 a.m. in the hall adjacent to Discovery Kingdom.
